Jerome J. (Jerry) Vallen is Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of UNLV's College of Hotel Administration. He founded that program and served as its dean for 25 years. After retirement, he spent several years in Australia at three different universities and he became the Founding Dean of the Australian International Hotel School (Canberra) where he held P&L responsibility for the hotel and the college.
After earning his baccalaureate degree at Cornell, he entered the hotel industry carrying with him the food experience gained from the family's small chain of four restaurants. He also earned a master's degree in Educational Administration (St. Lawrence University) and got his Ph.D at Cornell University in Hotel Administration 25 years after his baccalaureate degree. In 1953, he joined the faculty of the department of food service and hotel management at the junior college of the State University of New York and before going to Nevada, Prof. Vallen held a series of hotel and restaurant management jobs.
He taught at UNLV hotel school since 1967 when he become the head of the school, one of the first university that offered advanced and qualified education in the hospitality field. Now the Harrah College of Hotel Administration is one of the most renowned school attracting students from all over the world.
Prof. Vallen has authored and edited five books including a front-office textbook, Check-in Check-out, with G.K. Vallen now in its 7th revision. It is a job-training leader book and valuable professional reference in rooms management for over two decades providing exceptionally complete coverage of the hotel's front office and all of the support positions that make it work. He also edited a work on the legal basis for obtaining gaming licences in the state of Nevada.
He has served as a consulting editor for two text book companies, a restaurant consultant to the US Department of Commerce, and president of a consulting company. Prof. Vallen also served as a board member of various professional groups and business enterprises. He has been an outside examiner for the University of the West Indies.
In 1980 Prof. Vallen received the prestigious Howard B. Meek Award. He has been also the recipient of awards from the University Alumni Association and the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. He was elected into the National Restaurant Association's College of Diplomates. He has served as President and as Chairman of the Board of the Council of the Hotel and Restaurant Education.
Prof. Vallen has been cited in the Congressional Record and listed in the Who's Who in the West. He was named among The First 100: Portraits of the 100 Men and Women Who Shaped Las Vegas during the 20th Century
At AILUN Prof. Vallen gives the students a broad and deep understanding on the characteristics of the Lodging Industry and how it is going to change in the future.
