Prof. Chambers received his Ph.D. in Anthropology at University
of Oregon.
He studied for long time the development of Applied Anthropology in the
United States. In his book Applied Anthropology: A practical guide,
he presents various ways of applying anthropological research and analysis
to everyday social and political life, showing the real and potential
impact of anthropology in both developing and industrialized societies.
He is past president of the Society for Applied Anthropology and he is the founding editor for one of its journals Practicing Anthropology (of which Prof. Chambers is Advisor Editor since 1986).
Prof. Chamber's areas of interest include tourism, urban and regional development, knowledge transfer and utilization, and ethnographic writing. The development of a sustainable tourism is at the centre of his current research and theoretical activities. He is also an active participant in the Resource Management and Cultural Process track within the Department of Anthropology, University of Maryland.
In 2001 Prof. Chambers was awarded of the General Research Board Award by The University of Maryland for his research and in 1994 he received the Lilly Center for Teaching Excellence Fellowship.
Since 1990 he is General Editor of Advances in Applied Anthropology book series published by the State University of New York Press.
